The city has an area of 51.78 km². It has approximately 14 thousand inhabitants. Mariánské Lázně is the youngest of the famous triangle of West Bohemian spa towns. Since 2021, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List with Franzensbad and Karlovy Vary under Famous Spa Towns of Europe. The site on which the second largest spa town in Bohemia, Mariánské Lázně, is situated today was in ancient times full of swamps and completely deserted. In 1197, the nobleman Hroznata founded a Premonstratensian monastery in the settlement of Teplá, which also administered the area of today's spa. The monks were also the first to notice a salt spring in their forests and even tried to extract salt by evaporation. This salt was later successfully sold as a laxative. Meanwhile, rumours began to circulate about the healing effects of the mineral waters, and the first sick people headed to the springs. The monastery officials then cleaned the springs and improved the path to them. However, the first attempts to establish a spa failed. The locals did not trust the baths. During the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, the mineral waters were analysed again, and the name Marienbad first appeared during this period. Dr. Johann Josef Nehr, the esteemed monastery doctor, played a pivotal role in establishing the spa. In 1779, he convinced the abbot and several monks to undergo the spa treatment, which proved beneficial. Despite the challenges in obtaining permits, his perseverance led to the construction of a bathhouse in 1786. Marienbad was separated as a separate village from the existing village of Úšovice in 1812, and in 1818, it was granted the status of a spa resort, largely due to Dr. Nehr's efforts. Marienbad was named after the first spa building built at Maria's Spring. This spring was long before called Stinking Spring because of its pungent smell, but it got its present name from the Marian image that was supposedly attached near the spring by a soldier returning from the war as a thank you for having healed his wounds there. The further development of the spa was due to the abbot of Teplá, Karel Kašpar Reitenberger, who began building spa houses and pavilions in the early 19th century. In 1820, the renowned German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe graced Mariánské Lázně with his presence. His subsequent visits in 1823, where he spent his late love affair with the young noblewoman Ulrike von Levetzow, further solidified the town's place in history. Goethe's admiration for the natural conditions, encouragement of Abbot Reitenberger's construction of bathhouses, and advice to promote modern healing methods significantly boosted the town's reputation. His visits marked the beginning of a more affluent clientele visiting the spa, leaving a lasting impact on Mariánské Lázně. Opera composer Richard Wagner found peace and inspiration in Marienbad. He worked on two essential operas there, Lohengrin (in the summer of 1845) and The Master Singers of Nuremberg.
