Players of Chinese chess—better known as xiangqi—are familiar with the term Chu He Han Jie (楚河汉界), which literally translates as “Chu River, Han Border.” This dividing line on the board separates the two opposing sides, evoking the historical rivalry between the ancient Chu and Han states. While this link is more poetic than strictly historical, the reference captures the conflict, tension, and strategy found in the chess game. Chu He Han Jie—the concerto—draws inspiration from the drama of a xiangqi game. The opening is brisk and assertive, with rapid phrases representing the flurry of book moves and early exchanges. Soldiers are mobilised, cannons and horses are activated, with both sides’ intentions clearly showing. As the initial excitement settles, a tense calm ensues. The tempo slows, and the music becomes still, with occasional unexpected bursts of energy. Suddenly, the stillness breaks—tension erupts into a dramatic series of exchanges. Melodic fragments clash and intertwine, echoing the cascading consequences of aggressive play. The dizi soars and darts, mirroring the sudden turns of fortune on the board. Inevitably, this stillness does not last, as the piece builds rapidly once again towards the close.
