Stock positions measure economic value in terms of holdings of assets and liabilities, as well as net worth, at a specific point in time. For example, holdings of fixed assets in the form of buildings or holdings of loan liabilities to a bank would show in a balance sheet as stock positions on a certain date. Macroeconomic statistics only cover economic assets from which economic benefits may flow to the owners. This is called the asset boundary. Economic assets are resources over which ownership rights are enforced and from which economic benefits may flow to the economic owners. Economic benefits arise from owning and using economic assets and, usually, include the right to use, rent out, or otherwise generate income, or to sell the asset. The economic owner of an asset is the institutional unit entitled to claim the benefits associated with the use of the resource by virtue of accepting the associated risks. The legal owner is the institutional unit entitled by law to claim the benefits associated with the resource. This video makes use of these concepts to explain the asset boundary of a macroeconomic statistics balance sheet. Sources: System of National Accounts 2008 https://unstats.un.org/unsd/nationala...
