The Lake Ad Excellentiam was originally farmland and a rivulet in the Ma Liu Shui Village area. By the 1960s, it gradually evolved into a “Lotus Pond.” In 1996, the Chung Chi College Board of Trustees allocated over HKD three million for beautification and improvement works, including dredging the silted pond and constructing several walkways to facilitate student access between Chung Chi Tang, the library, and the University Station. The project was completed in October 1997 and officially opened on the College's anniversary day. The lake was named “Lake Ad Excellentiam” (未圓湖). The Chinese name 未圓, literally meaning “not yet a circle,” refers both to the elliptical shape of the lake and the idea that perfection is an ongoing pursuit. The name symbolizes continual self-improvement, echoing the College motto, “In Pursuit of Excellence.” This motto is artfully planted in forsythia on the grassy slopes by the lakeside.
