As part of the 2025-26 ACRC Seminar Series, Nicholas Kelly presents his Ph.D. dissertation proposal on the health and fitness behaviors of trading card game (TCG) players — a largely unstudied population. Using his personal background as a long-time Magic: The Gathering player, he frames his research around understanding the physical activity levels, attitudes, and exercise motivations of TCG players, and whether gamification could be used as an effective intervention to improve their fitness. He also walks the audience through the broader graduate research process — from coursework and identifying an advisor, to writing a dissertation proposal, navigating IRB approval, and managing data — making the talk a dual primer on both his specific research topic and the PhD journey in general.
