Harvesting Hope: Advancing Farmer Livelihoods and Food Security in Tajikistan’s Pyanj River Basin

For Tajikistan, agriculture is the backbone of rural livelihoods. But outdated irrigation systems and climate risks in the Pyanj River Basin have long threatened food security and incomes. Over the past years, the Water Resources Management in the Pyanj River Basin Project has modernized irrigation infrastructure, improved water governance, and strengthened farmers’ capacity to adopt climate-resilient practices. These efforts have boosted crop yields, enhanced water efficiency, and built resilience against floods and droughts. Sharimofah, a local teacher who also runs a small farm, used to struggle with unreliable water supply and low yields. Through the project, her farm gained access to improved irrigation, upgraded equipment, and training on modern farming techniques. With better water management, her crops flourished—allowing her to hire seasonal workers from the community. This not only increased her family’s income but also created jobs for neighbors, strengthening the local economy and fostering community resilience.
