Its name, derived from "church of Saint Grwst," reflects its ancient origins, with the earliest documented reference to the town dating back to 954 A.D. Llanrwst's development was significantly boosted in the 13th century by an edict from Edward I, which prohibited Welshmen from trading within 10 miles of Conwy, positioning Llanrwst, located 13 miles away, as a strategic and bustling market hub. This unique historical context gave rise to the local saying "Cymru, Lloegr a Llanrwst" (Wales, England and Llanrwst), highlighting its perceived independent status. The town's prosperity was deeply intertwined with the wool trade, and for a considerable period, it was said that the price of wool for the entire of Britain was set in Llanrwst. Beyond wool, the town gained renown for its harp and clock making industries, with notable families like the Owens contributing to its horological legacy for nearly a century. Today, while retaining its market town character, tourism forms a significant part of its economy, drawing visitors to its historic charm and as a gateway to the broader Snowdonia region. The town even made an unsuccessful submission to the United Nations in 1947, asserting its status as an independent state within Wales. Llanrwst is rich in historical landmarks. The iconic Pont Fawr (Big Bridge), a narrow three-arched stone bridge across the River Conwy, reputedly designed by Inigo Jones and built in 1636, is a key feature and a popular spot for photographs. Adjacent to the bridge is Tu Hwnt i'r Bont, a picturesque 15th-century building now serving as a National Trust tearoom, which was once a courthouse. St. Grwst's Church, a Grade I listed building, houses the stone coffin said to be that of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd. Furthermore, the 17th-century Llanrwst Almshouses, built by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir Castle, have been restored and now function as a local history museum, offering insights into the town's past and its community.
