~ THE REGIONAL AND POPULAR FORCES VIDEO DESCRIPTION: The Regional and Popular Forces (nicknamed the Ruff/Puffs by Allied forces) were two paramilitary organisations which focused on counterinsurgency. The Popular Forces were organised into platoons, ideally with a platoon deployed for every major village in South Vietnam. They would be able to detect guerrilla threats and request aid where needed. The Regional Forces were organised into companies, and performed larger counterinsurgency operations. When requested by PF troops, they would serve as reinforcements for villages in need. The Regular Army of the Republic of Vietnam and Allied infantry were trained for conventional warfare, and ideally would confront North Vietnamese People’s Army formations in battle. However, with the National Liberation Front’s tactics primarily consisting of scattered terror attacks and small ambush/raid tactics, a paramilitary force consisting of smaller units were needed to defend towns and villages. However, due to this smaller size, as well as lack of firepower, they were the prime targets for Communist units. The RF/PFs consistently sustained casualties for the duration of the war as a result, typically suffering almost double the ARVN. The RF/PFs, in total, was always higher than the ARVN in terms of personnel, due to the constant need for security. Eventually, they would reach slightly more than 500,000 men, before the Fall of Saigon in 1975.
