GSFA 2017 | World Animal Protection | Ghost Gear

Ghost Gear - lost or abandoned fishing equipment - can continue to catch, injure and kill marine animals for hundreds of years. As well as causing pain and suffering to marine animals, ghost gear depletes fish stocks and litters the marine environment. It's a major problem, with an estimated 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear entering the sea every year. This film was made with fisherman in the UK rather than with environmental activists because we wanted to engage those who are on the front line, who care about the damage lost fishing pots are causing to the environment, to sea-life and to livelihoods in particular. We tell the story from their personal perspective. The film is credible and inspiring to an industry audience because it tells a story of how fishermen are voluntarily adapting their practices and are distributing the film amongst their peers, we've helped them to successfully create a movement and desire for environmental protection within the heart of the Welsh fishing industry. The film demonstrates best practice as the escape hatches shown in the film are the result of a cross Atlantic knowledge share with fisherman in the USA who are also seeking to protect their environment.
