AI REMASTERED. Recorded on a Saturday night December 1979, Live at Mainstreet, Auckland. Recorded by Pete McKelvie on cassette Grant Philpott looked after for 30 years. This was the night Barry Jenkins aka Dr Rock saw us, and told Richard Driver the name Splash Alley had to go, we changed the name to Pop Mechanix. It was also this weekend at Mainstreet that Mike Chunn and various other industry notables came to check us out. History part 1, and our best songs • Видео HISTORY PART 2 Kevin Emmett had been in Tush, a Christchurch metal band and absolutely preferred and could emulate John Bonham of Led Zeppelins hugely powerful drum sound, as well he was the best vocalist in the band with range and power. Paul Mason from Inglewood in Taranaki, was at University, had a yellow mini station wagon and preferred Gibson guitars and Marshall amps and could emulate Jimmy Page after only 3 years of playing guitar. He was much more interested in melodic guitar solos than pure heroics, and unlike the rest of us, he barely moved on stage, and although he looked like a fully grown milky bar kid, his presence was very intelligent and cool. Paul Scott presented songs on bass and sometimes acoustic guitar, and we proceeded to create musical parts from there. Paul came from Waimate, in South Canterbury. He’d been collaborating with other musicians from Timaru and was already confident about writing songs, singing, and very proficient on bass guitar. He really wanted to be a songwriter/musician. I learned guitar young and enjoyed being part of a successful 3 piece band, playing bass, then guitar. I never expected to play keyboards but Paul Mason was a virtuoso on guitar after only of couple of years playing. I preferred commercial songs and love the sound of a Hammond Organ, and Fender Telecaster. So I got a Jansen Transonic organ from CJ’s, a Moog Synthesiser, and a Fender Stratocaster, and slowly started to develop a presence as a keyboard player guitarist. Paul’s songs were easy to like, his bass playing advanced, Kevin among the very best drummers, Mason so relaxedly powerful and intelligent, it was lucky for me for sure. We became Splash Alley. After our one show we knew we needed a frontman to make it big, and one of the best bands in town had a fantastic singer, who had a brother, who sang in punk bands… Dick Driver; an exciting visual performer, who knew the industry, and although he never was part of the song making and never wanted a slice of that, he worked very hard to get us noticed and he organised gigs, contacted agencies and pubs, did poster runs, and developed us a future. Principles and standards, themes for advertising, road crew, all began to come together then. Dick was from Christchurch, born in England and genuinely related to Mick Jagger. His other passion was racing motorcycles and his connections got us our first parties, and our lighting guy, Mark McKay who was also the talented artist who produced all our artwork, and drove the van when we started touring. We had another roadie in Christchurch, a volunteer, Graeme, who had befriended us. Nobody really knew where he was from, he was around for 3 months or so, then he disappeared, his room cleaned out, and a huge series of busts followed, one week before we went on tour. This revealed to us that he was in fact an undercover officer. He was always offering joints around or talking about drugs, ironically I wasn’t the least interested at the time, but friends of the band were busted and it upset us. Rumours were that the band or someone in the band had narced. At first we lugged the gear around in Paul’s yellow mini station wagon and my Austin ute. A lot of rehearsals for the 4 musicians, practise sessions, jams, composing, arranging, and presenting of new song after song. Bon Marché aka Newz had a fantastically entertaining residency at the Aranui, but wanted to tour. So we got the first half of the night, for 3 months. A few parties, a few pubs and halls. and then an opening act residency, it wasn’t much to go on, and when the big band returned…. We had nowhere to go but onto the road, slowly making our way north. The huge toll in the first few weeks was a shock, broken equipment, debt, expenses, bills… we kept going cos it’s all we had. Wherever we went, everyone was loving our performances. After the Mainstreet of Auckland we became the Pop Mechanix. Mike Chunn offered to manage us. Sadly Dick disappeared on my 20th birthday, sneaking south to escape… leaving us to scramble north, really with no other plan that to seek out Mike Chunn.
