Session Description: Title: Clinical Approach to Decision Making Capacity Lecturers: Rebecca A. Spear, DO, MaineDartmouth Family Medicine Residency Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Director and Jessa G. Derania, DO, MaineGeneral Behavioral Health Program Date: September 8, 2022 Release as Enduring Date: October 2022 Expiration Date: September 2025 Target Audience: This program was developed for the following audience: Physicians affiliated with MaineGeneral Health and/or MGMC and all other MGMC staff. Statement of Need: Capacity consultation involves moral and ethical implications, which should be explored as part of the consultation. Moral distress, uncertainty, and safety concerns often arise when addressing decisional capacity which is why complicated decisional capacity concerns are best evaluated with a multidisciplinary team. Program Learning Objectives: • Discuss one framework for medical decision making capacity • Differentiate between capacity and competency • Explain common ethical issues in capacity assessment • Distinguish physical capabilities needed to live alone from disposition decision making capacity Faculty and Disclosures: Faculty for this session : Dr. Spear is a member of the medical staff and employed as the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program Director at Maine-Dartmouth. She attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. She trained in Internal Medicine at UConn, where she served as Chief Resident and then completed a combined Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Yale. Dr. Spear is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Derania is a general adult psychiatrist who treats patients at the Alfond Center for Health as part of MaineGeneral Medical Center's behavioral health services team. She joined MGMC's active staff in August 2021 after receiving her doctorate from the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine and completing her adult psychiatry residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. Disclosure Statements: Faculty: Dr. Spear and Dr. Derania have provided a signed disclosure indicating no financial interest in any commercial interest that affect the content of this program (kept on file in the Medical Education Coordinator Office MGMC). The Medical Education and Library Committee members have on file signed disclosures indicating no financial interest in any commercial firm that would influence the content of the MGMC CME offerings (disclosures on file in the Medical Education Coordinator Office MGMC). Acknowledgments: This program has received no financial support from outside sources. Designation Statement: MaineGeneral Medical Center is accredited by the Maine Medical Association’s Committee on Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education (CME) to physicians.
