The Dialogues & Dishes interactive gathering explores food and design as powerful catalysts for connection, identity, and belonging. Participants engage in a hands-on cooking experience, guided by facilitators who share stories through ingredients—highlighting Indigenous crops and reflecting on themes of colonial injustice, migration, and familial traditions. The sensory experiences of cooking and tasting sparked intimate discussions on cultural identity, memory, and community. Through shared food and dialogue, participants created a Torana—symbolic gateways in South and East Asian cultures that represent hospitality, auspiciousness, and the act of welcoming others. The Torana, designed using diverse visual languages, serves as frameworks for design educators and practitioners to reimagine narratives, structures, and forms of social advocacy in response to today’s shifting political and cultural landscapes. Participants drew texts, images, and objects that inspire or reflect their own cultural or educational backgrounds. The gathering fosters cross-cultural dialogue and creative expression, inviting participants to reflect on how food and design can cultivate belonging, identity, and community in both personal and collective spaces.
