We’re back with a new video in our National Trust partnership series. In today’s video, we go behind the scenes at Mottisfont to explore a winter garden that’s been specially planted for colour and vibrancy at this time of the year. 🔶 About Mottisfont Mottisfont is a historic country estate located in Hampshire, England, known for its beautiful gardens, medieval priory, and art collections. Managed by the National Trust, it attracts visitors for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and cultural significance. 🔶 Behind the Scenes at Mottisfont with Jane Moore and Rob Ballard Speaking with Head Gardener, Rob Ballard, he explains that Mottisfont has had quite a history with the site being occupied since the 13th century. It was initially a priory and was passed over to various families who influenced what is present today. More recently, it’s had a lot of garden designers who have worked on the site with English architect, Geoffrey Jellicoe, involved with the design of the lime avenue. Other garden designers involved include Russell Page, Norah Lindsay and Graham Stuart Thomas. Graham was instrumental in the gardens at Mottisfont by introducing the world famous rose collection in the 1970s. Despite roses being out of fashion at the time, the collection is now visited by people from all over the world. The walled garden at Mottisfont is one of its famous features and the national collection of old roses that are contained within it is world-renowned. There are 417 varieties of roses in the national collection and Michael Harvey, Senior Gardener talks us through how they prune the roses in winter. 🔶 Pruning a Rambler Rose Michael explains that a big part of his job is to prune the roses and gives a detailed explanation of how he does this. The first phase is to look at taking off all the short growth out of the rose, pruning back to 2 buds. Any dead, diseased or damaged stems need to be taken out to help promote new growth. This includes taking out any older growth and replacing it with new growth, as the older growth doesn’t flower as well as the new growth. 🔶 Creating a Winter Garden The winter garden at Mottisfont has been planted especially with lots of winter interest plants, showcasing exactly how to make the most of your garden through the winter months. Senior Gardener, Tracey Geaves, shows Jane around the winter garden and points out some of her favourite plants such as witch-hazel, winter honeysuckle and the daphne. 🔶 Looking after the River Test The River Test flows through the Mottisfont estate and is looked after by Countryside Manager Dylan Everett. He explains why chalk streams are so important and how much wildlife inhabits the landscape around the river, as well as how they maintain this Site of Special Scientific Interest.
