Breeding Pyramid, where genetic progress flows downward from a small, elite core to the wider national herd. At the Apex are the Elite Stud Breeders, a specialized group—often registered with the Zimbabwe Herd Book—who focus on high-pedigree animals like the Brahman, Tuli, or Boran. These breeders utilize advanced selection tools and data (such as Estimated Breeding Values) to produce "superior" sires and dams with high genetic merit for traits like growth rate and fertility. This quality is then filtered down to the Middle Tier, or the Multiplier Breeders, who purchase these elite genetics to produce high-quality "grade" bulls and replacement heifers on a larger scale. Finally, at the Base of the pyramid sits the Commercial and Communal Producers, who represent over 80% of Zimbabwe’s livestock population. These farmers are the "end-users" who purchase improved bulls or utilize artificial insemination (AI) from the tiers above to upgrade their local herds, effectively "pulling" elite genetics into the communal kraals to improve meat and milk production across the country.
