(DAW Mock-up) Short symphony in 6 movements, inspired by the landscapes, history, people, and climatic extremes of Central Otago. 0:00 I. Ida Valley - First impressions of the huge spaces and lush, lively fields. The main theme is followed by expansive chords; momentum picks up and the theme becomes a series of dances. 3:58 II. Gabriel's Gully - Mid-19th century Otago; horses and activity precede a stately fanfare. A frantic goldrush follows, but momentum quickly burns out as industrial gold mining takes over. 6:19 III. Life on the Roaring Meg - The imposing Kawarau Gorge sets the scene, prospectors from all over the world converge, represented by folk songs - "Song of Monk" (Chinese), Waltzing Matilda, Polly-Wolly Doodle, and Molly Malone combine in counterpoint, but all end up in hard work. 9:51 IV. Summer - A slow, dry fugato reveals the sun beating down. A short "work dance" concludes the movement. 13:36 V. Winter - Fog rolls in and a distant crack heralds sparse elements interacting. It's not all doom and gloom, as sledding, building snowmen and igloos make for fun. 17:03 VI. Finale - A syncopated dance alternates with re-imaginings of the main theme. The movement becomes a steady current and culminates in a final fanfare.
