On the fourth Friday in November, prepare yourself for...BLACK FRIDAY. It’s one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Many shops open at midnight offering bargains and discounts. The term “Black Friday” was originally coined in America. It referred to the phenomenon of staff calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving. In the 60s it was associated with bad traffic caused by the rush of xmas shoppers. Then in 1970s retailers attempted to make the term a positive reference to stores making big profits and getting their finances “back in the black” rather than being “in the red”. When accounts were written by hand, retailers would use red ink when businesses made a loss and switch to black when making a profit. Today Black Friday means only one thing... Absolute carnage. Physical violence is common. In the US people have been shoved, stabbed and even shot dead. In 2008 a WalMart employee was crushed to death by a stampede of shoppers. In 2012 two people were shot during an argument over a parking space. Some stores refuse to open on Black Friday. Yet some think it’s a good thing. Is this just harmless bargain hunting...
