Johann Baptist Cramer (1771-1858) was born in Mannheim as the son of the violin player Wilhelm Cramer, musician in the famous orchestra of Mannheim, at the time considered to be one of the best in Europe. Remember our stories on W.A.Mozart visiting Mannheim (and Munchen) in 1775 (http://bit.ly/2rTlqUN). Very soon, the family moved to London, where the young Cramer become a pupil of Muzio Clementi, and from 1788, he toured throughout Europe as a concert player. In the Berlin National Library, a copy of the Cramer etudes, the work he still is famous for, is preserved that once belonged Beethoven. We thank the existence of that book to Anton Schindler, who has wrote remarks on the performance of those pieces at 54 out of the 84. 21 of them are signed with 'beethoven', so there is a good chance at least those directions are direct input from the master himself. Beethoven used this material to teach his nephew Carl (who also had lessons from Carl Czerny btw!). A lot has to be said on those remarks, since many of them open a still closed world: many talks on accentuation and even inegality is something we certainly do not apply in our today performance practice. Even not in this one always... as I probably will need some years to really understand all of it in the context of that time. Reading those instructions in one second make you aware that the early 19th c. indeed lies 200 years behind us. A very long time...
