Adolescence is a critical period of development when we learn more about the social world around us and the complexities of relationships and love. Between 10 and 25, we form new types of relationships, assert our autonomy, and learn how to navigate more complex social situations—with peers and romantic partners. Although peers, friends, and romantic partners become increasingly important during adolescence, there are other important relationships that adolescents need and are navigating—the relationships with the caring adults around them. Research is clear that relationships with adults, including parents, guardians, and mentors, are extremely important for positive development during adolescence. Support from caring adults can bolster mental health, increase overall well-being, and even predict successful relationships in adulthood. During the 2026 Love in Adolescence webinar, we explored the importance of the love and support from parents and other caring adults during adolescence, and discussed the significance and characteristics of natural mentors and developmental relationships. We also talked about how caring adults can support key developmental needs of adolescence while providing love and support.
