To understand that, first one has to know, what fallopian tubes are and what their functions are. Every month, in each menstrual cycle, one or 2 ovum/ova gradually gets matured inside the ovary in a female body and eventually get released in mid-cycle, after attaining full maturity. The released ovum gets sucked by any of the fallopian tubes and waits there for around a day for sperms to come, to get fertilised. After fertilisation an embryo is formed and that gradually starts migrating towards uterine cavity, fallopian tube assists this journey by helping their propagation by co-ordinated movement of tubes towards the uterus. Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and Saline Infusion Sonography are the two primary tests to assess tubal patency. But sometimes the results came negative due to spasm and the patient informed about query bilateral tubal block. So if your doctor told you that your tubes are blocked after primary tests then do not think that IVF is the only option left for you to get pregnancy. Proximal tubal blockage due to mucous or spasm can be easily detected and treated by hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. If laparoscopically not corrected then the option left are IVF or attempt for recanalization. Now this decision is dependent on some other factors like, age, ovarian reserve, sperm factor and the condition of tubes. If all these factors are normal then recanalization can be tried after individual assessment of risk benefit ratio, or else you need to opt for IVF treatment.
