Featured Artist Recording with Ian O'Sullivan and 1895 Jose do Espirito Santo Ukulele http://ukulelefriend.com -------------------------------------- Ian O'Sullivan Biography Ian O’Sullivan is a classically-trained guitarist and composer from the North Shore of O’ahu. Well-versed in Hawaiian music and the ‘ukulele, in addition to the Western classical repertoire, Ian has performed internationally as well as throughout the United States including Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. In 2013 Ian released his first solo album “Born and Raised,” featuring his original compositions alongside music of fellow Hawaii composers. In 2016 he released his second album “Songs for the North Shore”- a set of original compositions written for specific places and stories from the North Shore of O‘ahu. As a child, Ian began playing the ‘ukulele by ear. He then experimented with electric guitar in a rock band during high school years, familiarizing himself with contemporary styles of reggae, hip-hop, and rock through tablature and recordings. In 2001, Ian entered the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa as a marine biology major. Soon after he met Grammy Award winning artist, and (at that time) lecturer of classical guitar at UH Manoa, Jeff Peterson. He introduced Ian to the world of classical guitar. During his years at UH, Ian transformed from a non-music-literate garage band guitarist to being the first guitarist from Hawai‘i to be accepted to Yale University’s School of Music. During the 2016 season, Ian’s performances will include the New York Classical Guitar Society, Minnesota Guitar Society, Peninsula Guitar Series, Korea International Guitar Festival, Na Hiwahiwa Festival in Tokyo, and Benjamin Verdery’s Maui Guitar Class. Ian’s next projects include a book of sheet music to pair with his first album “Born and Raised” and an album of music by early Hawaiian composers including Queen Lili‘okalani, and Charles E. King. Ian currently teaches at the University of Hawai‘i and the Kamehameha Schools’ Kapālama Campus. -------------------------------------- Circa 1895 Jose do Espirito Santo Ukulele An extremely rare 1895 Jose do Espirito Santo ukulele is a world class collectable over 100 years in age. The instrument was handcrafted by one of three Portuguese cabinet makers (Jose do Espirito Santo, Augusto Dias, and Manuel Nunes) who first came to Hawaii from the island of Madeira, Portugal in the late 1800s to work in the plantation fields. Once their contract ended, all three moved to Oahu and were credited with the invention of the ukulele. A very serious collectible piece which many museums have never seen. The face, back, sides, and neck of the instrument was entirely handcrafted of Hawaiian koa wood. It's very light and there have been some restoration work needed to be done to return this historical piece to playable order. The ukulele has a very warm and well-balanced shallow-body tone with remarkable projection for such a small instrument. More details and photos at: http://ukulelefriend.com/ukes/1895-jo...
