Indian conservatism as a protest movement

For much of its existence as a quasi self-conscious body of political beliefs, Indian conservatism has operated outside the power structure. Unlike other non-Western societies, the political Establishment, particularly in the first 50 years after India’s Independence, has shunned conservatism. This lecture explores the nature of conservative grievances, first under colonial rule and, subsequently, during the prolonged Nehruvian dominance. What contributed to the end of its political isolation and its growing political clout? Why, paradoxically, did rapid economic growth and modernity increase the appeal of political conservatism?
