Loni Unser joined us for this Tech Talk to discuss head and neck supports and restraint systems for racers. There are different styles for head and neck supports and each of them have their own benefits to consider. The standard HANS device is compact and has a simple design, but you may have to switch up which device you’re using if you want to go from car to car. And you would only want to use this standard device with a five-point harness, not a three-point seatbelt. The other restraint we looked at was a Hybrid-style device. These devices can be swapped from car to car, so you don’t have to worry about your layback angle. You can also use the Hybrid for a three-point seatbelt, unlike the standard device. On the other hand, the abundance of straps on the Hybrid can make this a little uncomfortable, especially in a sports car or formula car.
