Today I finally got to ride the full loop out at Lagoon Greenway in Vero Beach. The weather finally stopped acting like a sauna and it was just right — breezy, quiet, and the kind of day where you actually want to be outside. For anyone who hasn’t been here yet, Lagoon Greenway exists for a reason. This whole area is part of the Indian River Lagoon watershed — which basically means the way the land drains here has a direct effect on the health of the lagoon. This property acts like a big natural filter. You’ll see marshy wetlands, native grasses, and retention areas doing the slow, boring-but-critical work of controlling water flow and cleaning runoff before it hits the lagoon. Nature’s Brita filter. You can actually see the water management design while you ride: Low spots that hold water after rain? That’s on purpose. Thick clusters of mangrove, cabbage palm, and wax myrtle lining the trail? Also on purpose. The whole site is built to slow water down, let the plants clean it, and keep the lagoon from getting blasted with polluted runoff every time it rains. It’s peaceful. It’s simple. And it’s honestly one of the most Vero Beach things you can do — go outside, breathe, and remember why we live here in the first place. If you’re local and haven’t done this loop yet, go. Now that the weather’s cooperating, it’s perfect. Bring a bike, or just walk it. Take your time. Listen to the osprey. Let your brain cool off for a minute.
