Bletchley to Bedford on The Yorkshireman

Bletchley, 11 July 2009. Electrics growl in from north and south but it's the hiss of steam that's much anticipated. It must be 45 years since i stood on this spot (hardly this station) and saw a steamer. 70013, Oliver Cromwell is heading for York via Bedford and Kettering. It's grey and damp but not desperately so. Buckinghamshire houses, fields and deserted platforms are soon replaced by the brick works-cum- landfill- cum industrial archaeology vista of the Bedfordshire clays. Then it's a brush with nature on the outskirts of Bedford, a pause above the Ouse, a brief slip and arrival in Bedford 15 minutes early. Next episode - the climb to Sharnbrook summit in Wymington Tunnel, if I ever get my act together.
