Welcome to my instrumental version of "Stranger on the Shore" written by Acker Bilk for his young daughter and originally named "Jenny" after her. The tune was written on a single scrap of paper by Bilk and handed over to arranger Leon Young who crafted the string arrangement, including the characteristic harmonic shifts at the very end. It was first released in 1961 in the UK, and then in the US, and reached number 1 on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. On 26 May 1962, "Stranger on the Shore" became the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 where it was issued by Atlantic Records on the Atco label, but it was quickly followed, on 22 December, by British band The Tornados' "Telstar", another instrumental. It was the UK's biggest-selling single of 1962, the biggest-selling instrumental single of all time. I have recorded two versions of this tune, the first in the style of Acker Bilk with the strings and orchestration. Thanks to Dave Robinson for his excellent BT. My second version is based upon the 1963 guitar instrumental version by The Eagles. Not to be confused with the later band of the same name from the USA, The Eagles were from Bristol in the UK. My thanks to Got Twang for his excellent BT. Best wishes Neville 26th May 2025
