This is a motor that was a recent purchase that had lack of power. We did our standard diagnostic on it and found it was running only on the top 2 cylinders. Spark check was good x 3, compression ranged from 124 - 128 (perfect!), fuel sample good. It failed the balance check and had no power being generated by the bottom cylinder. It had the wrong spark plugs in it, so after the compression test we installed 3 new correct spark plugs. Usually when this happens it is because a carb issue and it is getting no fuel to the cylinder. We can shoot a burst of carb cleaner into the carb and the RPM will pick up. Not so in this case. This is a fresh rebuild, and the RPM did not change with the carb cleaner to the bottom cylinder! The motor has NO vacuum to the bottom cylinder through the front of the carb to pull fuel and air through the carb to send it to the piston to power up the lower cylinder. Anyone else reading this that speculate why this might be? It is almost like the bottom crank case seal has fallen out and no longer pulls a vacuum through the carb. In any case, there is is no way to determine what failed withour major surgery. Please check with us for your used parts needs, as we part out boats and motors on a daily basis.
