Story I’m really not sure why the song swam into my brain or what triggered its creation. Most of my songs are direct response an event or something that has challenged me to think in some way but that’s not the case for ‘Come Back to Me’. If I had to guess I’d say it was very much born from musical influence. I would think it’s obvious to anyone looking at my music that the ‘Levellers’ are fairly big inspiration on what I write - not the biggest but definitely well up there. They are one of the biggest acts on the UK Folk/Folk-Rock/Folk-Punk scene. They even have their own folk festival based in Devon where live. If you’ve never listened to them do yourself a massive favour and get your hands on ‘Levelling The Land’ and work your way into their stuff from there. As I’m sure most of you will know, on ‘Levelling The Land’ there is a track called ‘Another Man’s Cause’ about a family dealing with the aftermath of the losing the father during the Falklands war. It's an anti-war protest song. Although I never set out specifically with this objective in mind, I think I wrote ‘Come Back To Me’ as a response to ‘Another Mans Cause’ roughly around the time of Remembrance Day/Armistice Day. Although I never purposefully sat down and thought ‘I’m going to write a song from the point of the point of view of the mother ‘lying home alone’ in that song but ‘Come Back to Me’ very much could be exactly from her point of view. Whilst ‘Another Man’s Cause’ deals with looking back at her husbands demise as well as the horror at the prospect of her boy wanting to join up to follow in his footsteps, ‘Come Back to Me’ is more about the awful waiting game and the dreadful strain of ‘not knowing’. Seeing someone you love leave and not even knowing if they’ll come back or whether they are even still alive or not. It’s more in line with she might have felt as the Father left for the Falklands in the first place as opposed to dealing with losing him. The threat of grief as opposed to grief itself. The feeling every military wife, husband or parter must feel as they watch their spouse march off to fight another pointless war. This video is an AI generated music video created scene by scene using an AI programme called 'Kyber AI'. It's still not easy to make an AI music video like this - which I'm partially glad about. You have to describe what you want scene by scene and edit an awful lot of extremely strange things out! In the UK The Poppy or wreathes of Poppies are associated with Remembrance and as a result they feature heavily in the video. Lyrics Come Back to Me Written By James Spencer I wake to see the dawn The pale sun rise How have four years have past Since I looked into your eyes? So where are you now? It’s like part of me has died There’s not a thing I wouldn’t give Just to hold you by my side Well, it’s safe for me to say, that war can take it all Are you a nameless face buried in a field am I alone forever more? I watch the river flow I hear the raven cry Were you ever here at all? Thoughts crossing through mind A picture of you Fades there gently in the frame They say remember all the good times It’ll help you through the pain Well, it’s safe for me to say, that war can take it all Are you a nameless face buried in a field am I alone forever more? Come back to me Don’t die for someone else’s cause far across the the sea Come back to me Don’t die in someone else’s war far across the sea Well, it’s safe for me to say, that war can take it all Are you a nameless face buried in a field am I alone forever more? Come back to me Don’t die for someone else’s cause far across the the sea Come back to me Don’t die in someone else’s war far across the sea Come back to me Come back to me Come back to me Come back to me James Spencer - Main Vocals, Guitars, Tenor Guitar Matthew Warren - Backing Vocals Rebecca Balzani Barrow - Violin Neil Rolfe - Bass Steve Tanton - Drums
