Series 3 : EP5 : Huts, Hot, Nope - Stonington Island and Red Rock Ridge

26th March, 2025. We shift a short distance along the coast from our aurora viewing location to the tiny Stonington Island where there are the remains of two historical research stations, one British and the other American. Oh, plus the obligatory penguins, seals and whales that Antarctica has kindly laid on for us. It's interesting to see the conditions under which the staff on these station loved and worked. The ice mass across from the stations cracking and rumbling as a backdrop to daily life. The buildings are well preserved with some renovation and still with some remaining stocks. The British hut still has Maxwell House coffee (not the best) and an empty 'Weetabix' packet. Now if they had proper Aussie Weetbix (the original and the best) they would still be powering along. In the afternoon we play 'excuse me' with the sea ice and shift to a point for a landing on Red Rock Ridge. The weather starts to get a bit iffy. Not good for keeping cameras dry in the Zodiacs or taking videos so I chicken out and don't go. The intrepid souls that do go don't stay very long. Can't have it all beer and skittles. Also continued apologies for the sniffles. I hadn't realised I still had them until I was editing the audio for this episode. #travel #antarctica #cruise #expedition
