(30 Sep 2010) HEADLINE: Hearings start in alleged plot to murder Afghan civilians CAPTION: A soldier's videotaped statements describing how he and his colleagues randomly killed three Afghan civilians came under scrutiny Monday at a hearing into one of the most serious war-crimes cases from the war in Afghanistan. (Sept. 30) NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST. A U-S soldier's videotaped statements describing how he and his colleagues randomly killed 3 civilians came under scrutiny in a hearing into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan. Corporal Jeremy Morlock is among 5 Stryker soldiers facing premeditated murder and conspiracy charges. Prosecutors say after the killings members of the platoon posed for photos with the bodies...mutilated the corpses...and even collected fingers. In this military interrogation video obtained by the Associated Press from a source involved in the case... Morlock details a plot he says was led by Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs to kill for sport while on patrol in Kandahar Province earlier this year. SOUNDBITE(English),Jeremy Morlock, US Army Corporal "You know he pulled out one of his grenades and popped it, throws the grenade and then tells me, Winfield alright wax this guy, kill this guy kill this guy." An attorney for the alleged ringleader, Staff Sergeant Gibbs, says each of the killings was quote-- "appropriate engagement". But Specialist Adam Winfield...another soldier charged in the case...told an agent during his interview that Gibbs had a "kill team". SOUNDBITE(English), Adam Winfield, US Army Specialist: "Wagner: Kill team? Yes that's what he called it. Wagner: What did he mean by that? He meant that he was going to kill people one way or another. Wagner: Are we talking about enemy combatants? Enemy or non. Wagner: Non-combatants? Yes." Winfield sent messages about the alleged plot and threats against him to his parents after the first killing in January. His father told ABC News that he made about 6 calls to military officials to warn them about his son's claims. SOUNDBITE(English),Christopher Winfield, Adam Winfield's Father: "He said that if he told anybody over there he would never make it past that night. He would never make it home.")) No suspects were arrested until May, when a witness in a drug case told investigators about what he thought were unjustified killings. Winfield's hearing is expected some time over the next 6 weeks. Morlock's hearing started Monday. His attorneys are looking to discredit the statements their client's videotaped statements saying they were made under the influence of several medications...and after their client had suffered several blast concussions. SOUNDBITE(English),Michael Waddington, Morlock's Attorney SOT: "Rather than sending him back or treating him, the army kept giving him prescription drugs; up to 10 drugs at a time and pushing him back out on the battlefield and eventually he was unable to function on the battlefield." Members of the defense admit they don't know what drugs prescribed or not- Morlock was taking at the time of the KILLINGS... But they have said hashish smoking was apparently pretty common in the unit... and in some cases it may have been laced with opium. Still Army officials maintain that he was articulate during those interview sessions and his account of was backed by others in the unit. Morlock and Winfield's hearings are meant to determine whether the case should proceed to a court martial. If convicted, Winfield, Morlock and the other Stryker soldiers could face the death penalty.
