Mahonia Berry, also called Oregon Grape, can be found in people’s landscape but few know the berry is in fact edible. It is not great straight off the bush but it transforms when cooked into amazing purple goodness. The plant contains berberine (golden seal’s claim to fame) which is used for stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach upset, as a bitter tonic, to treat infections, and to cleanse the bowels. The berries contain less berberine than the rest of the plant. Roots and stems have the highest concentration. We are going to explore cooking with these berries and see what deliciousness can be created. The flowers in the winter are a great source of food for bees and the berries are enjoyed by birds. A perfect addition to your food forest. Forever Foods Farm. May 2, 2023.
