Gabbro Soils and Tecate Cypress (Hesperocyparis forbesii) woodlands in Northern Baja California, Mexico are the setting here. with Sergio & Alan's help, we identify some of the cool species growing in this understudied habitat. For those that don't know, Tecate Cypress is a somewhat rare tree in the redwood and juniper family, Cupressaceae that only occurs on soils of gabbro origin in Southern California and Northern Baja California, Mexico. Chemically speaking, Gabbro is the intrusive igneous equivalent of Basalt. It is a mafic rock, somewhat high in both magnesium and iron, and it weathers to a red color as the iron in it is oxidized. This is a unique and fascinating plant community and habitat and the fungus found growing in it is equally intriguing. Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true.
