34046 Braunton finds the Devon Hills a Pushover! West Country Luxury Steam. 2Jun25

After the recent rain things seemed to be getting back to normal so I decided to capture 34046 doing a bit of climbing .......... big mistake! We start at the top of Whiteball where N.R. have installed new 2 metre fencing at this popular spot, making it very difficult to get a shot but using a car as a step-ladder and attaching the tripod to the top of the fence allowed me the shot I wanted. If only mother nature had played along as a small cloud arrived at the critical moment. 34046 seems to be working but it is difficult to tell how much! Next to Rattery Bank where I learned that a number of line-side fires were started by 34046 over the weekend through the Welsh Marches and by the time the train reached the Devon Banks, instructions had clearly been given to let the diesel do all of the work. Pretty as it all looks, it's not what we came for!! Finally to Langstone Rock near Dawlish Warren for the return run along the coast where fire risk is low and although Braunton is doing a bit, it is not what we know her capable of. However despite all of the above, seeing a beautiful locomotive like 34046 Braunton in lovely weather and scenery is still a joy. I hope you agree.
