As the US tech-led global equity plunge kicks off the first week of 2022, Taiwan’s tech and semiconductor-heavy TAIEX Index has held up relatively well, outperforming the usually highly correlated Nasdaq and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index by nearly 4%. With foreign investors having pulled out of Taiwan in 2021, the market is being upheld by domestic retail investors trading on margin. Weston Nakamura flags the current market set up as eerily similar to the May 2021 Taiwan equity crash, which subsequently pulled the Nasdaq lower for its second wave of downside. Keep eyes on the highly influential but often forgotten Taiwan equity market, even if the broader markets stabilize in the near term.
