IWC Pilot TOP GUN Manufacture Chronograph - Thoughts on the Wrist Reference number - IW389001 Currently available at https://secondtime.com/ Paul's thoughts on the IWC Pilot TOP GUN Manufacture Chronograph, with some historical context. It was purchased by our client at an authorized retailer in March of 2020, and appears to have not been worn since that day. The 44mm ceramic case is in flawless condition, with no scratches, chips, or dings. This watch is a (Time CAPSULE), complete with its original presentation box, warranty certificate (dated 03/2020), instruction manual, aftersales booklet, and microfiber cloth. The IWC Pilot TOP GUN has been the top of the Pilot watch range since its launch in 2007. It evolved from a single watch to an entire family in 2012 and is distinguished by their black ceramic cases. The IW3890 features a new 44mm case and it really feels like the goldilocks of watch cases: not too big (like a TOP GUN Perpetual) and not too small (like a Pilot TOP GUN). This case also addressed the strongest criticism of the TOP GUN family: it had too much branding, with the colorful caseback and TOP GUN logo on the 9 o'clock side. The side engraving was removed and has not returned. The caseback is still adorned with the TOP GUN US Navy Fighter Weapons School logo, but it is much more subdued since it was engraved into the titanium caseback with no other finishing or coloring. This new model also did away with the date window that displayed three dates at a time (I guess we can all figure out yesterday and tomorrow from today) and restored the 9 on the dial. The calibre 89361 movement is new for this watch as well. It previously made it's way into the Portugieser collection through the Yacht Club, but this is the first time we can recall it being used in the TOP GUN family. It features a two register chronograph with the ability to time a 12 hour event. How, you ask? Through the ingenious creation of a two handed subdial (at 12 o'clock) that allows the hands to be read in their natural hour and minute positions. To make this even cooler, this movement is a flyback, so it is able to be instantly reset and on to timing the next activity in a single push of the bottom pusher.
