Kenwood House Volunteer, Ros Milner, gives an online Spotlight Talk on the Suffolk Collection, a series of early 17th Century full-length portraits which hang in Kenwood House, London. Ros Milner’s talk, entitled ‘Dandies and Fashionistas of the Jacobean Court’ examines in detail the 9 portraits formerly owned by the Earls of Suffolk and painted by the English artist William Larkin (early 1580s – 1619) of the Howard and Cecil families. Larkin was active from 1609 until his death and executed a very English form of portraiture, out of step with continental European painting of the period. He was known as ‘the Curtain Master’ until he was identified by Sir Roy Strong in 1969. Ros Milner is passionate about the opulent dress and jewellery in the paintings and gives exquisite detail of the textiles depicted in addition to providing informative background about the sitters, not always the most exemplary of characters. Introduction and fade out music: Benjamin Britten’s ‘Gloriana’, about Elizabeth I, composed in Suffolk to celebrate the 1953 coronation of Elizabeth II.
