Neoplasm: Types and Classification What is a Neoplasm? A neoplasm is an abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells, which may be benign or malignant. It is commonly referred to as a tumor, though not all tumors are cancerous. Neoplasms can develop in any tissue or organ of the body. Types of Neoplasms 1. Benign Neoplasms (Non-Cancerous) Grow slowly and remain localized. Do not invade nearby tissues or spread to distant parts of the body. Usually have well-defined borders. Can sometimes cause problems by compressing nearby structures. Examples: Adenoma – Glandular tissue growth (e.g., in the colon, thyroid). Lipoma – Fat tissue tumor. Fibroma – Fibrous connective tissue growth. Hemangioma – Abnormal growth of blood vessels. Meningioma – Tumor of the meninges (brain/spinal cord covering). 2. Malignant Neoplasms (Cancerous) Grow rapidly and invade nearby tissues. Can spread to distant organs via the bloodstream or lymphatic system (metastasis). Have irregular borders and uncontrolled cell division. Examples: Carcinoma – Cancer of epithelial cells (e.g., lung, breast, colon, prostate). Sarcoma – Cancer of connective tissues (e.g., bone, muscle, fat). Leukemia – Cancer of blood-forming tissues (bone marrow). Lymphoma – Cancer of the lymphatic system (e.g., Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). Glioma – Cancer of glial cells in the brain. Classification of Neoplasms 1. Based on Tissue of Origin Epithelial Tumors – Arise from skin or glandular tissues (e.g., adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma). Mesenchymal Tumors – Arise from connective tissues (e.g., osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma). Hematologic Tumors – Affect blood and lymphatic systems (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma). 2. Based on Biological Behavior Benign – Non-invasive and non-spreading. Malignant – Invasive and capable of metastasis. 3. Based on Degree of Differentiation Well-differentiated – Cells resemble normal tissue. Moderately differentiated – Cells show some abnormal features. Poorly differentiated – Cells look very different from normal tissue. Anaplastic – Cells are highly abnormal and aggressive.
