Vasculogenesis refers to the process of creating brand new blood vessels. Now you must be thinking when does this process happen? Well, vasculogenesis primarily occurs during embryonic development, and it plays a critical role in establishing the foundation for the body's blood vessels. While in adults, it occurs very rarely, under certain circumstances. 👉 Mechanism of Vasculogenesis The magic of blood vessel formation begins in the mesoderm layer of the embryo. This layer is divided into three parts, but we're interested in the splanchnic layer, which is responsible for forming blood vessels. The splanchnic layer gives rise to special cells called hemangioblasts, which create angioblasts. Angioblasts cluster to form Blood Islands in the extraembryonic mesoderm. Angioblasts present at the periphery are the precursors of endothelial cells. The hemangioblasts in the center of blood islands form primitive hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) that give rise to blood cells. Now, endothelial precursors cells rearrange themselves and merge the lumen of different blood islands and form forming the primary vascular plexus. Once, it is formed, rest of the vessels are formed from these existing vessels by angiogenesis. ▬ 📌 Angiogenesis ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Now, ‘Angiogenesis’ as I have already mentioned, refers to the formation of vessels, from pre-existing capillary structures. The angiogenesis process happens in two forms: 🔵 Sprouting 🔵 Intussusceptive microvascular growth (IMG) I have explained both these mechanisms in detail with amazing illustrations and analogies to make it even easier for you to understand. Here, to feed your curiosity I would like to briefly mention what is actually happening in these processes. 👉 Sprouting Angiogenesis Sprouting angiogenesis is the most common type, where new blood vessels sprout from existing ones. It involves tip cells that lead the way, guiding stalk cells to create the body of the new vessel. It's like a branching tree, that adds up branches to the existing ones. 👉 Intussusceptive microvascular growth (IMG) Now, the other type of angiogenesis is the Intussusceptive microvascular growth (IMG) or non-sprouting angiogenesis. The word “intussusceptive” means drawing in of something and "microvascular" refers to the small sized vessels. So, the term "intussusceptive microvascular growth" literally means the inside folding and splitting of small blood vessels to form new vessel segments. This happens when existing vessels split into two parts. Thanks to the formation of transvascular pillars.
