The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Newton Division on January 3, 2023. The incident began when officers were called to a report of a man throwing an unknown metal object at a passing vehicle. When the driver pulled over, he was confronted by the suspect, who had a knife. When officers arrived, they located the suspect on the second-story landing of a vacant residence, holding a metal pipe. The officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the suspect refused to come down the stairs and went inside, closing the door. The officers formed an arrest team and entered the residence, where they were confronted by the suspect holding a two-foot-long metal object with a spike protruding from one end. An officer-involved shooting occurred at that point, and the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers, victims, or bystanders were injured in the incident. The investigation will be reviewed to determine if the use of deadly force was in compliance with LAPD policies and procedures.
