Deep in the Dane Hills of Leicestershire, beneath the twisted roots of an ancient oak, a blue-faced witch waits for the sun to set. She is Black Annis, and she does not just hunt for food; with iron claws and a hunger for flesh, she is hunting for a new skin to wear. The Legend: Based on the English folklore of Black Annis (or Black Agnes), the bogie-witch who inhabited a cave known as Black Annis's Bower. Legend says she tanned the skins of her victims to wear as a skirt and hung her iron claws inside her cave. Lyrics: [Intro] The forest thickens where the light gives up Something waits below the roots [Verse] They told us not to wander here Beyond the stones, beyond the path Where the ground opens like a mouth And the air feels hard to breathe at last She lives where daylight never stays Where bones are stacked like prayerless signs A shape wrapped deep in ragged skin With hunger older than our time [Chorus] Black Annis waits beneath the hill Where roots and shadows meet She does not chase, she does not call She waits for careful feet If you feel the forest close around And the silence pulling tight You’ve already stepped inside her ground Where no one leaves the night [Verse] They say she watches from the dark With eyes that swallow flame She knows the sound of breaking trust She knows the taste of names The crows go still when she draws near The wind forgets to breathe Every missing child becomes Another tale we leave [Chorus] Black Annis waits beneath the hill No warning, no demand No curse is spoken, no deal struck Just soil upon your hands If dusk has crossed the treeline once And you don’t turn away The forest’s already made its choice And she will make you stay [Bridge] I heard my name from nowhere near I felt the earth draw close I ran before the darkness learned How slowly I would go [Final Chorus] Black Annis waits beneath the hill Long after warnings fade She does not hunt, she does not rush She knows the paths we take The forest keeps what it is owed And leaves no mark behind Some stories live to keep us safe Some wait to take their time [Outro] The trees stand still. The hill remains. She is still there. 🤘 About Metal Stories: Original metal sagas exploring the darkest corners of folklore and legend. #BlackAnnis #Folklore #MetalStories #Leicestershire #EnglishFolklore #DarkSagas #HeavyMetal
