Ian Collins is joined by Sam Armstrong to discuss the news that Hamit Coskun has won his appeal over being convicted for burning a Koran. Armstrong hails the decision, citing the words of the appeal judge, who states clearly that there is no offence of blasphemy in UK law and that the law is not designed to prevent people from being hurt or offended, even grievously. He stresses that the right to freedom of expression must include the right to express views that "offend, shock, or disturb." Armstrong strongly criticises the initial actions of the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the district judge for bringing and upholding the original charge, calling the conviction "wrong from the start." He also highlights the shocking circumstances surrounding the event, where the man who attacked Coskun with a knife was only charged with common assault rather than attempted murder, or a terrorism offence. Armstrong points out the inconsistency and suggests it reveals a "profound fear" within the British establishment about doing anything that could be seen to offend the Islamic faith. He concludes by defending Coskun’s protest as legitimate, noting that he is an Armenian Kurd and atheist who has personal reasons to protest the government of a foreign country, and that allowing all arguments to be heard ultimately enables common sense to prevail. #Quranburning #starmer #HamitCoskun Have you got a story?
