The hajj, one of Islam’s five pillars, draws around 2.5 million people for five intense days of worship in one of the world’s largest gatherings of people from around the world. A key part of the rituals is Tawaf, walking around the Kaaba, the holiest site for Muslims, seven times. A replica of the Kaaba was set up at Azadi sports hall in Tehran where the actual pilgrimage was simulated to prepare pilgrims for the ritual in Mecca later in the year. For many Muslims, the hajj signals their spiritual rebirth and the burial of past transgressions. The physically demanding rituals of the hajj offer a profound experience for Muslims, with the faithful often weeping and their palms stretched toward the sky in prayer and repentance. It is required of all able-bodied Muslims once in a lifetime. This year's hajj follows a thaw in relations between regional powerhouses Iran and Saudi Arabia. The kingdom had broken ties with Iran in 2016 after protesters invaded Saudi diplomatic posts there. Saudi Arabia had executed a prominent Shiite cleric with 46 others days earlier, triggering the demonstrations.
