Southill Estate are busy digging ponds because clean water is where nature throws its best parties. These new ponds might have been commissioned with great crested newts in mind, but as usual, nature is refusing to keep things exclusive. Birds, bats, insects, amphibians and wetland plants are all expected to turn up once the water settles in. Wide edges for waders, insects on the wing, plants hitchhiking in on livestock — one good pond has a habit of starting a chain reaction. This particular bit of magic has been delivered by the brilliant team at the Newt Conservation Partnership as you can hear from Pete Case, and funded through the NatureSpace Partnership — proof that smart regulation, specialist delivery and a bit of ecological know-how can result in landscapes that work better for wildlife and people.
