En este manga, el autor decidió elegir a Onizuka como protagonista y meterlo en el papel menos esperado, profesor. Fue premiado con el premio Kōdansha al mejor manga en 1998 en la categoría shōnen. También cuenta con una secuela llamada GTO; Shonan 14 Days, que relata la historia ocurrida en los 14 días después del incidente con el profesor Teshigawara, los cuales no salieron en el manga original.
