Highlander Blackthorn 1XL V2 Tent Setup & Review – First Impressions and Field Test In this guide, I walk through the full setup of the Highlander Blackthorn 1XL V2 tent, share my first impressions, and provide insights from real-world use in woodland and cold-weather conditions. First Impressions – Blackthorn 1+ My initial thoughts on the updated Blackthorn 1XL V2 are very positive: The overall size feels almost identical to the previous XL version. Improved connectivity between the inner tent and outer flysheet. Stronger, colour-coded poles make setup easier and more reliable. Same rugged, weather-resistant build quality. Fully waterproof construction, as expected from Highlander tents. New hook added above the head area for convenience. One notable change is the reduced ventilation area at the foot box compared to the previous XL model. This makes the foot area noticeably warmer, although it does reduce airflow slightly. During testing, any overnight condensation seemed to collect on the outer flysheet rather than affecting my sleep system, which was a positive surprise. Field Test & Winter Suitability From a practical test perspective, winter suitability depends on your expectations: The tent can handle adverse weather and even mountain conditions. With proper preparation (such as pre-cooked meals), a winter night is manageable. Cooking inside on a wet night is not recommended due to limited space and ventilation. Best Uses for the Highlander Blackthorn 1XL V2 Based on my experience, this tent is ideal for: Cycling and walking tours Group camps where you mainly need a compact sleeping shelter Minimalist backpacking setups Pairing with an additional tarp to create an extended living area and allow the flysheet to remain open for better views Comfort & Livability Warm and cosy interior due to enclosed design that retains heat and reduces convection. Excellent blackout capability, helping keep daylight out for better sleep. Simple, practical layout focused on efficient shelter rather than living space. Setup & Pack-Down Time Approximate setup time: 15 minutes Pack-down time: around 15 minutes Final Thoughts The Highlander Blackthorn 1+ remains a sturdy, reliable, and highly weather-capable one-person tent. Its warmth, durability, and compact design make it particularly suited to touring, fast camps, and minimalist adventures. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments.
