The FilmHarmonia Orchestra plays an encore performance of Mission: Impossible by Lalo Schifrin (arr. Calvin Custer). The Mission: Impossible television series ran from 1966 to 1973, with its opening theme song proving unforgettable despite its unusual 5/4 time signature (five beats per bar, instead of the more common four beats). The famous rhythm derives from the Morse code for “M.I.”: – – • • The theme remains a staple of the Mission Impossible film scores (1996 onwards). It bears influences from composer Lalo Schifrin’s education in classical, jazz, and Latin music during his early life in Buenos Aires. Schifrin worked as a pianist for Astor Piazzolla, pioneer of the modern tango, before relocating to Los Angeles in the 1960s where he composed for film and television until his retirement in 2015. https://filmharmonia.com/ https://static1.squarespace.com/stati... Musical Director: Joshua McNulty Joshua McNulty is a conductor, school band director, and composer. He graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium in 2015 where he studied composition and conducting with Sandy Evans, Carl Vine, John Lynch and Anthony Clarke. Joshua has worked with many ensembles including: the Macquarie University Symphony Orchestra; the Canaria Scoring Orchestra; the Wellington Players; the Inner West Community Band, and Strathfield Symphony Orchestra. Joshua has a keen interest in music written for the screen and stage. His most recent project, the FilmHarmonia Orchestra, is born out of a desire to see film and game music celebrated artistically. To date, FilmHarmonia has played eight sell-out shows. As an educator, Joshua directs numerous school bands across Sydney as well as tutoring many students on their instruments. Josh McNulty’s exposure to music was as a member of a choir composed of cicadas when he was growing up, being raised by wolves, in the wild lands of Thredbo. He quickly graduated to playing many different kinds of gum leaf. It seemed inevitable, after a tough apprenticeship under the harsh instruction of a large merino named Fluffy, that he would start writing music to be played by all kinds of untamed creatures. Today he uses his favourite wand made of ancient paddle pop sticks with a core of red belly black snake skin.
