This route is perfect for anyone looking to escape the busier spots and experience the Forest at its most calm and natural. The walk begins among tall conifers and mixed broadleaf trees, following wide, easy tracks created during the Forest’s historic timber-growing period. Like many of the inclosures, Crockford Clump was enclosed in the 18th and 19th centuries to supply timber for shipbuilding and later for industry — but today it has softened into a quiet refuge for wildlife. You may hear or see woodpeckers, tits, finches, woodland thrushes, and on a lucky day, roaming New Forest ponies or deer moving quietly between the trees. As the path opens out, the inclosure borders stretches of classic New Forest heathland, giving you lovely contrasts between shaded woodland and wide, airy views. The mix of light, space and habitat makes this a great spot for birds, butterflies and seasonal colours from gorse, heather and mossy forest floors.
