Over the Rainbow

This a what Vintage motoring in New Zealand is all about. A simple idea of roads least travelled , coupled with right sort of vehicles driven by enthusiasts with a common interest. Organised with the minimum of unofficial fuss by Diane and Roger White back in the week prior to Easter 2008. This mini epic took us from Blenheim down the Eastern side of the South Island's Alpine spine, Through the huge Molesworth Country Station to Hamner Springs, A day or so later we swung Westwards from Jack's Pass, heading directly over the Southern Alps via New Zealand's highest road, the Island Saddle (1,347 m) on what is called the Rainbow Road. The route is challenging with all gravel surfaces , steep scree slopes, rocky river flats and the occasional ford of varying sizes! Normally in countryside that is the domain of 4x4's.The vintage cars proved their design credentials by conquering all obstacles and assisting those who struggled.Finally after a lunch stop at Coldwater Creek, we followed this rugged road as it broke out of the steep valleys onto the West Coast at St Arnaud. This movie was compiled from the group's combined cell phone footage, blended with the mastery of Tommy Emmanuel's music. It is dedicated the the memory of Diane White whose bubbly love was like big bright rainbow.
