(4 Nov 1999) English/Nat The Indian army says it has recovered the bodies of two Islamic militants killed in a gunbattle inside its army headquarters in Srinigar. The militants are believed to have been members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyaba group, who staged a daring attack on the army camp on Wednesday, killing a major and six soldiers. The bodies were recovered from the rubble of buildings that were destroyed during the battle between Indian troops and their attackers. Indian officials identified one as Abu Talha, the chief of the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba group in Srinagar. Shortly after dusk Wednesday, the attackers hurled a grenade and fired automatic weapons on a sentry post on the main road. They then burst into a series of army offices, finally opening fire on a public relations officer - killing him and six others. Five other soldiers were wounded in the strike. Army officials say a plan of the base was found on one militant's body, roughly sketched on notebook paper, with the names of the various offices correctly marked. The attack came just hours after Kashmir's army commander, Lieutenant General Krishan Pal, said the army will continue a campaign to crush Kashmiri separatist guerrillas. The unprecedented raid on the biggest Indian army base in Kashmir is likely to deepen India's distrust of Pakistan's new military leadership. The authorities in Islamabad allowed the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba to stage a three-day fund-raising conference for the war against India that coincided with Wednesday's raid. A man claiming to represent the outlawed organisation telephoned the Associated Press in Srinagar and said the attackers were from a suicide squad. He said only two men carried out the raid but the Indian army says there were three. SOUNDBITE ( English ) : These L-A-T ( Lashkar-e-Tayyaba ) militants were part of a suicide squad of the L-A-T. I would draw a connection to the recent meeting that took place in Pakistan, headed by the L-A-T chief, in which they decided on a strategy to go in for attention drawing acts due to the pressure they are under due to the operation by the combined security forces." SUPER CAPTION : Major General J.R. Mukherjee, Indian Army Three news photographers who were caught in the battle were unharmed after sheltering in the bathroom during the fighting. The pressmen were visiting the army press officer when the militants attacked. Firing continued until early in the morning on Thursday and the photographers emerged from hiding after several hours, but were detained under guard while their identities were confirmed. SOUNDBITE (English) ; "Out of six, five who were killed were unarmed public relations staff - I repeat , unarmed - who are as good as part of the press and part of you all. There were also three reporters in that building. The attack was also therefore on them. They are just fortunate , very fortunate , thanks to God , that they are safe. And therefore I consider it a dastardly attack on the press including the army press." SUPER CAPTION : Major General J.R. Mukherjee, Indian army It was the first time since the Islamic insurrection erupted in Kashmir ten years ago that guerrillas had attacked the headquarters of the army's 15th Corps, which oversees all military operations in Kashmir. Militants have had frequent gun battles with security forces, mostly the army, in their quest to make Kashmir independent. In recent months, separatist guerrillas have attacked six army camps in Kashmir.
