In the lateral portion of the L shape that the state of Louisiana has, Sand Lake MX offers up a rather unique moto experience. 30 minutes north of the 12 interstate that bypasses New Orleans is half equestrian country, half "deliverance". In the chili bowl of geographic lifestyle is a 600 acre offroad park built around a gravel extraction site which now serves as a massive lake and day beach. This part of the state was at one time oceanic floor, and the evidence is left in the soil. Nestled inside of Zona ATV Park is Sand Lake MX which is operated independently by a gentleman named Ricky. One of the most notable things about the privately owned park is the price of admission: $10. If you want to session the moto track, it's an additional $10. While Ricky prepped up the moto course, I went on the corner track positioned to the other side of the fire road we pitted on. This course alone I would drive 14 hours to ride again, especially for $10. You'll notice a few water puddles in the footage, that's due to it raining for 13 hours straight the day before, which would serve as unrideable anywhere other than pure sand. I clicked off a 20 minute warm up on the corner track, which was massive. By the end of the moto I was feeling unbeatable, but of course my memory card had a corrupted file taking up a bunch of space so we don't get to see my fire breather laps. After the warm up, Ricky had the moto course ready to roll. He mixes in red clay to help the sand hold some form, because otherwise it would be Lommel, which for his demographic is not prime moto condition. I headed out and by the second lane of the track it felt like I was in a video game. I started to get more comfortable with the layout and soil type which proved to be a little tricky in spots as it did have a hard base in a few sections from the clay mixed in while bottomless in others. Once I got my lines cut in, the only thing stopping me from endless laps was my tired backside spending the week in the Chevy van and my knee still tentative from the twist at Golden Pines. I'll say right now, this is an absolute destination. The Zona facility has hookups, bike wash stations, big wide access roads, and is a beautiful place to spend a weekend. Add in the moto track, and you have practically no reason to not stop in for a weekend as you traverse from one side of the country to the other along the I-10 corridor, or just want to spend the weekend in a cool place off the beaten moto path. Bike set up: I swapped out my wheel to go with the MX12 rear, which was absolutely mandatory. I did not prepare the 3S front for the weekend, but the MX33 held its own and did a good job. The 3S would've been superior, but I made due and changed my style up a little. I also went 2 clicks softer on the front, to even out the ride feeling. There were some sand ruts developing and because of the 33 front, it tended to understeer and push. Easing the front end stiffness accomplished an easy patch. Had the track been extremely rough in race condition, I would've kept the base clicker setting from Race Tech and raised the forks up in the clamps a couple millimeters from my current flush height to preserve the stiffness but achieve a little more steer angle.
