Rookie Cop Defends Meeting w/ Police Chief About Karen Read Trial

Kelly Dever was one of the more combative witnesses we've seen in Karen Read's trial in that she did not try to hide her condescending outlook on the defense. Dever currently is an officer with the Boston Police Department, but she was an officer with the Canton Police Department the day John O'Keefe was found dead in 2022. Dever initially said she saw ATF agent Brian Higgins and Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz spending a "wildly" long amount of time with Read's SUV at Canton police headquarters, but she now says she knows she was mistaken. Read's lawyers called her as a witness today (Monday, June 2, day 25), and Dever sparred with Alan Jackson about her changed statement and her meeting with the police commissioner, Michael Cox. Dever dismissed any suggestion that Cox tried to influence her testimony and get her to change her story about what she saw at police headquarters. She said her meeting with him "was a reflection of how good a leader he is."
